Malmo vs IFK Goteborg

The Swedish Super Cup is taking place in Malmö between the winners of Allsvenskan Malmö FF, and the Swedish cup winners IFK Göteborg. These two clubs are the biggest in Swedish football in terms of history, which means there is a certain rivalry whenever they play each other, whether it's a friendly game, cup game or league game - They always want to beat each other.

Let's begin with the Allsvenskan champions, Malmö FF. With the youngest team in the league, they proved many experts wrong when they lasted the full season and ended up as winners despite the least physical team in the league, as well as youngest. What makes this group special is the talent that each individual player has, and the ability to always find good replacement whenever a player leaves to maintain the level of quality. Malmö proudly represents a football style we are not used to see in Sweden, with more of a possession based game plan, short passes and like to call themselves Barcelona inspired and aim to share the same philosophy. The group is young and possesses much individual quality, many faces have been around the club since they were youngsters, so they basically breathe the clubs name and there is a certain proudness inside of the team, something unique in comparison to the other domestic clubs. Head coach Rikard Norling is a great coach, who have managed to get the best out of every player and keeps the morale high during the entire season which likely will award him to continue in Malmö FF next year as well.

Roster wise, Malmö has the most in form team right now after winning the league, although captain and offensive midfielder Jiloan Hamad will make his last game in the Malmö shirt after signing a contract with Hoffenheim from Bundesliga, he says this game is of massive importance and that he would like to finish his career with another trophy and snub the rivals

- We played versus Göteborg quite recently, so we know our game plan in order to be successful against them. Also, we are in a good momentum after our recent victories which gives us a good feel about tomorrow, Hamad said.

Guillermo Molins, the local hero who returned to the club after a failed career attempt abroad in Belgium and Spain, has been a massive key factor for the team, he scored 9 goals in 11 appearances since his return and the entire team has been boosted by his arrival. The mood inside the club is bright and if we shall believe Malmö themselves, they will play a strong team in order to win the Super Cup. The only absentee is central defender Filip Helander (18/0) but the backup is more than decent, as Erik Johansson steps in.

To the opponents, the Cup winners IFK Göteborg was a mentioned title candiate for Allsvenskan deep into the season but when it mattered the most the wins didn't come and they were ruled out of the title race. This team is known for playing a hard physical football style which has seen them see criticism in papers for their "boring" style of play on some occasions. The players themselves defend the argument by stating as long as it's effective, it's worth it. In comparison to Malmö, they play the opposite. It's like comparing Barcelona to Stoke as a bigger perspective comparison in terms of philosophy, however these two teams have had hard battles before and it is likely another one is to come. Assistant coach Magnus Edlund had his say about the upcoming battle

- We feel good from our previous game. We will play compact, aggressive and try to move the ball up whenever we have the chance. I am aware we will be pressured heavily by Malmö but we need to control that.

Göteborg's overall approach towards this game does not seem as urgent and serious in comparison to Malmö's, as the team looks to field a younger team and rest some of the veterans that normally play such as Hannes Stiller and Pontus Farnerud. Instead, it is expected and mentioned that will get the chance to show themselves, players like midfielder Darijan Bojanic (born 1994), Sam Larsson (born 1993) and Joel Allansson (born 1992) will likely appear, but the heaviest loss for Göteborg will be the absence of international striker Tobias Hysén (28/14) who undoubtedly is the face of this team and offers speed, as well as a goal scoring threat, It will be hard for them to replace him here against a fired up Malmö FF team, but it looks like Lasse Vibe (14/2) and Robin Söder (26/9) will start up front in Hysén's absence. Two slower players in comparison to Hysén but they will play after their resources and try to frustrate Malmö's possession game by playing physical and long.

This cup is up for grabs, and the question is who wants it more? It appears that Malmö FF is the better team at the moment and has less roster problems and are eager to win another trophy. There is a winning mentality in Malmö and I believe as this is the last game before Jiloan Hamad's departure from the club, who has been there for 6 years will be a motivation factor for fans, staff and team mate players. Göteborg enters as underdogs for understandable reasons, first of all their form towards the end of Allsvenskan did not look good, and without their main striker against an eager Malmö team will surely be noticeable, overall it does not seem like the cup would satisfy Göteborg in any specific sense and their expected line-up shows lower ambition than their opponents. I think Malmö will keep the tempo up, dictate the game and keep possession for most part of the game, in front of their own fans where the team is particularly strong, they should play with much confidence which should lead to Göteborg being unable to stand up and eventually concede - It is tiring to play against a team like Malmö and I trust the home advantage along with the hungrier team.

Pick : 1 Odds : 1.73 Stake : 8 / 10
