Wigan vs Millwall

Wigan is 4th in the Championship so far with 67 points after 19-10-11 this season, which brings them in a good position for a play off to the Premier League. With six games to go, it is four points down to 6th placed Reading, who has the last playoff-spot at the moment, while it is nine points down to 7th placed Nottingham Forrest. Things are therefore pretty good when it comes to pressure while it is totally different for this evening’s opponent.

Wigan is going to Wembley this weekend to play Arsenal in the FA-Cup semi-final, and the manger Uwe Rossler is expected to do a number of changes in his starting lineup. Ryan Tunnicliffe (5/0), Rob Kiernan (8/1) and Martyn Waghorn (10/4) cannot feature in that match and are very much available for starting tonight. The winger Shaun Maloney has been injured since September last year, is also available to get some time on the pitch. Jean Beausesjour (28/2) is also back after his suspension.

The defender James Perch (36/0) has nine yellow cards this season, and will get a two-match ban if he gets another one, which means that he would miss the FA-Cup semi-final. It is therefore uncertain if he will play against Millwall. However, Roger Espinoza (15/0), Ben Watson (25/2) and Chris McCann (27/2) are still injured.

Millwall produced a massive win against 7th placed Nottingham Forrest away from home in the last game. The win brought them one step up from the very bottom and into 23rd place at the table with 36 points after an 8-12-20 record. The way up to the safe-spot seems impossible as Charlton has 38 points, but two games in hand on all of the other teams in the relegation zone, accept Barnsley (22nd) who has one game in hand. However, it is still possible and taken Millwall’s spirit in their last game, they have not given up at all.

It is looking good with their squad as the striker Jermaine Easter (18/3) could be back on the pitch tonight, after being injured for four weeks. It is then only two absences in Millwall as Richard Chaplow (19/1) and Dan Shittu (22/1) will both miss the game. Their manager Ian Holloway made seven alterations on the team that beat Nottingham Forrest, while he could be changing a couple of players to this one. Both midfielders Nick Bailey (22/1) and Lee Martin (21/1) have just made it back from injury not long ago and another match tonight could be too much for them with such a short rest.

It is clearly two teams with a totally different setup towards this match. Wigan is already thinking about the match at Wembley the upcoming weekend, while Millwall are desperate to hang into the possibility to still make it in the league. Wigan will change a lot of players and are pretty safe on their playoff-spot, while Millwall has almost a full squad to pick from. I expect a very open game, with goals both ways. I therefore pick over 2,5 goals tonight.
